4th Edition of the German-Algerian Energy Day (Power to X)

Green Hydrogen in Algeria - Potential and Perspectives of Cooperation

Within the framework of the Algerian-German Energy Partnership, the Ministry of Energy and Mining, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection (BMWK), have co-organized, on December 20, 2022 in Algiers, the fourth edition of the Algerian-German Energy Day under the theme "Together towards new sustainable energy solutions".

The work was initiated by the speeches of Mr. Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, Ms. Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, Samia Moualfi, and Ms. State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection (BMWK), Franziska Brantner. Mr. Commissioner for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Nouredine YASSA,Ms Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Elisabeth Wolbers and M. Ambassador, Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Algeria, Thomas Eckert also took part in this meeting.

The German-Algerian Energy Day was an opportunity for the Minister of Energy and Mines and the Parliamentary Secretary of State to review the state of bilateral cooperation and prospects for strengthening its implementation in the areas of natural gas, electricity, renewable and new energies including green hydrogen and the promotion of energy efficiency. Other topics relating to energy policy and environmental protection and climate were also discussed.

The Algerian-German cooperation is a platform for dialogue, consultation and exchange on the challenges to achieve, together, common goals set in the framework of the Paris Agreement and in the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 of the UN, to ensure access to reliable energy, sustainable, modern and affordable for all.

The slogan of the meeting  "Together towards new sustainable energy solutions" is the translation of the common will to take up the economic, industrial, financial, technological and environmental challenges we are facing and to identify ways of thinking and acting for the deployment of low-carbon technologies such as the green hydrogen sector as an energy vector and a lever for the decarbonization of the energy sector and the development of renewable energies.

Thus, the first session of this day entitled Green Hydrogen - Opportunities and Challenges for Business - has highlighted the strengths of Algeria in the field of hydrogen and the existing potential to continue to play a major role in the global energy scene and safe and reliable energy supplier, which offers real opportunities for partnerships at the national and international level. The work continued with discussions on the development of renewable energy in Algeria, their integration into the network and decentralized renewable energy and the role of energy efficiency in climate protection.

Today, about half of the electricity consumed in Germany is already produced on the basis of renewable energy, including solar and wind power. These experiences have shown that the development of renewable energy must be accompanied by financial support and technology transfer, necessary for their development.

In addition, the Algerian-German day was an opportunity for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Sonatrach and the German company VNG in the field of green hydrogen with the aim of developing projects of common interest in this field. This memorandum reflects the quality of the Algerian-German energy partnership.
German companies are invited to seize all opportunities to further develop the partnership in the field of Energy on the basis of the principle "winer - winer".

Finally this meeting was an additional opportunity to reiterate our common will to further consolidate the bonds of friendship and excellence of relations between Algeria and Germany, especially in the energy sector and mining.
