German-Algerian Energy Day

The latest strategies, instruments and development trajectories for a sustainable energy future in Algeria, Germany and beyond were discussed during the first German-Algerian Energy Day in Algiers.

What are the political tools that most effectively stimulate the development of renewable energies? What is the cost of integrating the renewable energy network? How to manage the structural changes that the energy transition brings, in a way that benefits both society and the economy? These are just a few issues that were debated by politicians and senior figures from academia, think tanks and the private sector.

Within the framework of the German-Algerian Energy Partnership, the Algerian Ministry of Energy and the Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany (BMWi) jointly organized the 1st Algerian-German Energy Day, under the theme "Facilitating the Energy Transition: Seizing opportunities, tackling challenges", on 24 April 2018, at the Sheraton Club des Pins hotel in Algiers.

“Germany started its energy transition in the early 2000s. Between 2000 and 2017, the share of our electricity consumption from renewable sources increased from 6% to over 30%, explained Ambassador Michael Zenner of the Federal Republic of Germany during his speech following the opening of the conference by Zoubir Djouabri, Chief of Cabinet of the Algerian Ministry of Energy. "Algeria has taken a similar approach in the field of energy. Together, we can demonstrate, internationally, the feasibility and the great benefits of the energy transition for the societies and economies of our countries.”, he stressed. For the Algerian Ministry of Energy, the major axes of the energy transition in Algeria are defined and the programs for renewable energy and energy efficiency are committed and will continue until 2030. German experience and expertise are welcome as a support to accelerate the current development of an ecologically and economically sustainable economy and energy supply system.
