CBAM: Algeria enhances its commitment towards a green future.

On November 4th and 6th 2024, the Algerian-German Energy Partnership organized two webinar sessions on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), led by experts from PTX-Hub, to support Algerian stakeholders in understanding this essential mechanism.

The first day covered the main concepts and principles of CBAM, as well as the monitoring and reporting obligations during the transitional phase (2023–2025), in preparation for its gradual introduction in 2026. The second session focused on CBAM’s impact on the Algerian electricity market and its influence on the future hydrogen market, with a particular emphasis on their export potential.

These webinars brought together around 60 participants representing institutions such as the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Sonatrach, Sonelgaz, the ARH, the CREG, and Alnaft, all of whom actively engaged in the discussions.

These sessions helped foster a better understanding of CBAM—crucial for adapting Algeria’s energy export strategies and transitioning toward a more sustainable future. As the driving force behind this cooperation, the Algerian-German Energy Partnership continues to play a key role by strengthening dialogue and facilitating exchanges between Algeria and Germany to address the challenges of the energy transition. The project was mandated by the BMWE and implemented by GIZ Algeria in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies.
